Goodbye Claire

claire

As many of you know, Claire Tabraham will be leaving us this summer to start a new exciting life in the Cambridge area, where her husband is training to be a Methodist Minister.

We are going to sorely miss her, both as a wonderful teacher to the Monday tap classes, as a brilliant trustee, and also as a great dancer and friend to many!

We hope Cambridge proves to be a fantastic adventure for Claire and her family, and wish her lots of luck and fun in her new life.

And please Claire come back to visit us and tell us all about it!

Hello Sarah

We are pleased to welcome Sarah Whitfield who will be taking on the Monday tap classes.

Sarah has known Claire for many years, and she has taught adults as well as children, plus has been involved in choreographing routines for various productions.

Hopefully by now many of you have had a chance to meet her, and I know we will all make her very welcome at Woking Dance Space.

Summer Classes

Although term finishes on the 3th July, a number of teachers are carrying on over the holidays. With the exception of the first two tap classes, these are extra to WDS ones so you need to pay the teacher direct as you go (usually £4 an hour but do check with them first).

Prices

At Woking Dance Space we are committed to providing access to dance for everyone, and as a result we aim to make our prices as low as possible. In fact we haven’t increased them for over 10 years.

However we have recently faced a number of changes in our costs – our insurance alone has gone up by £200 a year – and our landlord, Surrey County Council, has indicated that it is reviewing the basis of our rent (and indeed that of all the occupants of the Mayford Centre). So, reluctantly, we are raising our prices for hirers and classes as from September.

The class fee increase is not much, generally 50p a class, and we have tried to limit the changes for those of you doing more than 3 classes by changing the discount structure.

The new charges are shown below. If there’s anything you want to know about the studio finances, or the changes, please collar one of the trustees!

Recent performances

Iolanthe

Despite sore toes and sweaty wigs (or was that the other way around?), members of the Tuesday ballet crew successfully survived four performances of Iolanthe with KASJOG, including two on the Saturday (i.e. very sore toes).

In fact they all reported having a jolly good time, and totally indulged in over acting as well as secretly admiring the neon glow wigs so much they are reputed to have kept them (you know who you are people!!).

However it wasn’t all hard work on stage as you can see! Cheers ladies!

First Dance Show: Behind the Scenes

Woking Dance Space dancers guested in First Dance’s show in May, putting on a fabulous Contemporary number, choreographed by Eithne, and a pretty ballet number choreographed by Gretchen.

firstdancefirstdance

The ballet girls showed huge professionalism on the opening night when their music stopped not once, but at least three times, and Emma gave them a medal for carrying on with their number and even their smiles!

Look out for…

Anna Burrows and Emily Francis who will be dancing, en pointe, in the Closing Ceremony of the Olympics.

Apparently its hard work, pretty tough choreography and the costumes rival the pink outfits in dubiousness! However don’t ask them too much as they have been sworn to secrecy…

Good luck ladies – we will be scanning the TV pictures for you!

Congratulations

Lots of congratulations are in order:

Jodie Read and Lisa Mansfield for getting engaged earlier in the year (sorry ladies – missed you in the last newsletter!), and Beki Tooze for her engagement in June.

Plus we are look forward to lots more wedding piccies when Louise Bradbury gets married in April next year.

Also huge congratulations to Julia Hicks on the birth of her lovely daughter Flora May in early June. And hot off the press, lots of congratulations to CL Ellis who gave birth to a beautiful baby girl called Bethany-Rose Artiza on the 3rd July.

Events & Dates for your diary

There’s a couple of exciting events which we are working on at the moment.

Pietra Mello-Pittman is bringing together the Royal Ballet and Rambert dancers with the singers of South Africa’s Ladysmith Black Mambazo, and as part of their fundraising we are hoping to hold some masterclasses with Royal Ballet teachers followed by a cocktail party late this summer. Keep an eye on the website and Facebook for news of this one!

We are also thinking of joining the Save The Children’s Ultimate Dance Challenge 2012, which runs from 6-14th October and is a sponsored 5 hour danceathon. So again watch out for news of that one.

And of course, there’s always next year’s fantastic show in May!
